When young children develop early math knowledge, it benefits their later reading success. To support caregivers of children ages 0 – 5 in growing these skills, Sacramento Public Library began a multifaced effort to infuse early math into early learning initiatives. This grew into a partnership with the California Early Math Initiative to develop tools for California libraries to support early math.
In this program, Sacramento Public Library and California Early Math Initiative staff provide an overview of early math concepts and show examples of how library staff can share this information through a range of early learning resources and programming ideas. Participants will gain an understanding of early math concepts, their value in the first five years, and learn specific techniques for designing library experiences that include early math, train staff to support early math engagement, and how to communicate the value of early math in their communities.
